The Office
- Ross Blair (1944- )

    Patched velvet chairs,
        Enemy of the stain,

    Blocked walls, dead spaces,
        On'ed switches, Edison's dream,
        Coated trays and charred remains

    Polished backs, lemon cloth,
Cast tombs and the weeping moth,

    Lost numbers, believing faces,
        Frozen writing, the metal places,

    Flying fans, parchment heaps,
        Tapping, tapping,
            Tapping hands
                        And smiles among the departed.
